Installation

How do I install my GPS unit ?

Securacom GPS basic installation consists of a simple 2-3 wire hook-up. All our system needs is a constant +12 volts and a good ground. There is an optional ignition wire that can be hooked up for start-stop reports.

We designed our systems so that even a weekend mechanic can install their system in about an hour.

The units go under the dashboard with the antenna sticking under the dash by the front window. When powered up, all the led's should show green and amber showing the unit is seeing the satellites and that we see communication to the cellular network.

How does our system work?

  1. Our devices automatically monitor data about the vehicles in which they're installed, such as speed, location, direction of travel, and engine status. The system reports at programmed intervals.
  2. Our devices wirelessly send their data to our secure servers.
  3. The reported data is accessed through our secure GPS web site. The web site also allows you to send location queries to devices in the field.

What can our GPS systems monitor?

In addition to speed, location and direction of travel, our devices can monitor vehicle electrical systems using the input/output (I/O) pins on the device: for example, ignition status, door locks, and temperature can all be monitored. You can set up alerts for most of the items that we monitors; for example, our systems can let you know when vehicles exceed safe speeds, or whether a vehicle's engine is on or off. Reports are sent by e-mail or text message.

What can our GPS system Control?

Our systems output connections can be used to control certain electrical systems in your vehicles. For example, you can install a device to remotely lock or unlock vehicle power doors, or to disable the starter so that the vehicle's engine cannot be started.

How much data can we store?

FleetGPS securely stores transmitted data for online retrieval for 90 days. We archive all data for 7 years.

Does our systems work everywhere?

Little Brother GPS (AMPS) works is all of North America including Alaska and Hawaii. Our units cover Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and parts of South America. Of course, like all wireless communication systems, some geographic and weather conditions can affect signal strength and coverage availability.  GPS signals, for example, may be suppressed if vehicles are in underground garages.

GSM systems do not have the coverage of our AMPS systems at the moment. The United Stated GSM networks are still being built up with new areas added every day.

Current GSM coverage includes most of the the major metropolitan areas across america. Coverage is good in most areas East of the Mississippi. West of the Mississippi, most major cities have coverage. There are still rural areas that GSM does not cover. For areas not covered by GSM, you can use our Little brother GPS unit that uses the AMPS Network.

What is GPS?

GPS (Global Positioning System) is the technology that pinpoints vehicles location using a network of 24 public global satellites positioned above the earth's atmosphere. FleetGPS devices use GPS to track vehicle locations, speed and direction of travel.

Our GPS is accurate to about 25 feet or less, and the antenna generally requires a direct view of the sky to track accurately.

What is a GeoFence?

A GeoFence is a geographic boundary that you define by right clicking and dragging over an area on your map. Our systems record all entry and exit of assigned vehicles from GeoFence boundaries and can alert system users when these "events" occur.

What is an alert?

Your system can be set up to send notification alerts when certain events occur, such as when vehicles cross GeoFence boundaries, or when they exceed speed limits. Alerts can be sent to email, pagers, cell phones with SMS text messaging*, or any device with an email address, such as PDAs.

What is a locate?

A locate is any unique data point or event recorded by our systems either automatic or user initiated that is transmitted to our servers.  For example, scheduled data recording, speed events, and geofence violations are all locates.
